5 Things You Should Know About UNAV!

Since I made a post noting the unique aspects of Spain and Pamplona, here are five observations I've made since being at my university that are different from how UNC functions.

You Can't Sit With Us: The easiest way to tell a foreigner from a full-time student here is to look at how she's carrying her books. None of the girls here use backpacks! They all use designer totes to carry their stuff around, so that must build up their shoulder strength quite a bit.

She Doesn't Even Go Here!: Campus security is on another level here. In order to enter any building at any time of day, you have to pass your university ID card over a sensor and then the doors open. You also have to do the same thing upon exiting, which I'm guessing is how they keep track of where everyone is, because if I were to try to swipe someone else in a building, it wouldn't work if I'm already inside because the system can't register two entries in a row. It has to be entry-exit.

You Go, Glen Coco: Classes here are an hour and 30 minutes, and we have a 15-minute break after the first 45 minutes. Class schedules are made in blocks of an hour and 45 minutes, but in my two smaller classes, my professors prefer to not have a break and just power through (which I also prefer).

Stop Trying to Make "Fetch" Happen: The Mean Girls references are becoming less and less relevant, but I didn't want to break the trend. But all the libraries here close so early. During the week, the last ones close at 9 p.m., on Saturdays, a few are open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and two are open on sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There's a 30% Chance It's Already Raining: I love all the bathrooms here because they're the kind that have an entire door for each stall, so there aren't cracks for people to see in from the sides, top or bottom. I never understood why bathroom stall doors had cracks in them, but UNC should take some notes.

One thing I've learned since my last post: On Wednesday I started a Latino dance class! Over the course of the semester, we'll be learning salsa, merengue and bachata. We started with salsa, so I now know the basic steps and turns.

Also, just so this post isn't all text, here's a picture of my lunch from Wednesday, pollo a la plancha, from one of the many little restaurants on campus!

¡Hasta luego!
